Friends of Sula: Lex Pott

Lex is an experimental, material-driven designer who uses color as a core element in his work. He operates in his studio in Rotterdam and collaborated with Sula on the Frietjes rug collection back in the day.

Q: How did you get where you are now?

Slowly and gradually. I explored many types of products and experimented with different materials. The journey was full of trial and error, but along the way, some things worked out really well.

Q: Where did you study?

I studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven. I loved the combination of art school and industrial design.

Q: What was a big turning point in your career?

Starting my own studio, Lex Pott. There was no Plan B. I decided to give it three years to see if it would work. Luckily, I’m still doing what I love most — designing and making objects from real materials. Having a studio that is small but flexible is a combination that has worked well so far.

Q: Who are your favorite designers or artists?

I’m a big fan of the sculptors Giuseppe Penone and Ulrich Rückriem.

Q: What tips would you give to entrepreneurs or designers at the beginning of their careers?

Always take responsibility — blame yourself first and find solutions. It’s not easy, but you don’t need much to start. My first studio was just 9m², and I improvised a lot. Take it step by step, and give yourself time.

Q: How did you meet Nadja and Sula?

I’m not entirely sure. I think we met in Milan at Salone del Mobile.

Q: You designed the Frietjes collection for Sula. How did you come up with the design?

The design actually came from Rotterdam architecture. The idea was to bring big volumes and shapes onto a 2-dimensional surface.

Q: What’s your favorite color

Yellow, ever since I was a child.

Q: What inspires you and your work?

From daily routines. Looking at the same things twice can reveal different layers of information.

Q: What is success for you?

The freedom to do what you want.

Q: What would you like to design for Sula in the future?

I would like to explore different ideas for Sula. Towels, wall rugs, tea towels, pillows and many other textile objects come to mind.
